JOB SUMMARY
Under the Distribution System Supervisor, this position acts as operator of backhoe, excavator and other equipment as assigned.
Assignments may include removal and replacement of lead service lines, maintenance of water distribution system mains, services, hydrants and other system structures.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Acts as crew member for tasks assigned which may include lead service line locating, removal and replacement.
Inspection, maintenance or repairs on the distribution system and installation of water services and mains.
Diagnose system problems such as water leaks, hydrant issues, street failures, distribution system failures.
Preventative maintenance, emergency repair and replacement of water system appurtenances using variety of hand tools, power equipment Update and maintain electronic records using GIS, electronic mapping programs and databases as required.
Pavement and landscape removal and restoration as required for other tasks mentioned herein.
Operate equipment needed on a given project or task which may include hand tools, utility locating equipment, pneumatic tools, trucks and trailers, loaders and excavators and other equipment that may be used by the utility OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Collaborates with other Heavy Equipment Operators to be in rotation for after hour’s emergency repair work which requires 24 hour availability and 30 minute response time to report to work from time of notification.
Uses Lucity Asset Management Software program and Utility’s GIS, maps and database for record keeping and diagnostics related to various duties and responsibilities.
Distribution system tool and equipment maintenance, snow removal, grass cutting, general site and building maintenance.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or Equivalent Must have or be able to obtain a DSL within 30 months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Must have a valid “B” Commercial Drivers License at time of hire with an Air Brake endorsement minimum.
Must be or become familiar with materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance of Distribution system appurtenances.
Must have a good working knowledge of water distribution systems.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor and lift 100 pounds on a regular basis for extended periods of time.
Must be mobile in a variety of work environments including climbing steps, ramps, ladders, and entry into confined spaces.
Ability to remain focused in a fast paced work environment.
Logical thinking and problem solving, legible handwriting, be able to express themselves clearly and concisely in both oral and written reports and following both written and oral instructions.
Must be conscientious, dependable and responsible.
Have proper regard for the use of time, materials, supplies and equipment.
Must have a desire to learn company policy as it applies to incumbent’s job and relationships with customers.
Must have ability to cooperate and maintain a friendly relationship with fellow employees and supervisors and communicate effectively, coherently, and respectfully with the public under all circumstances.
WORKING CONDITIONS Incumbent is required to work regardless of weather conditions on the distribution system.
This may require work in inclement weather including hot, cold, dry, wet or night time conditions POST OFFER TESTING REQUIRED The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace, therefore successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
