TEMPORARY POSITION: This seasonal position allows for a maximum of 1,000 hours per calendar year.
It does not include any benefits.
Position Availability: Summer 2024/Construction Season Position Duration: 8 – 12 weeks SUMMARY: This position is designed to provide an opportunity to apply principles and theories learned in the classroom, explore a career path and be supervised and mentored by a professional in their field.
In this entry-level position, employees will gain a multitude of skills related to the fabrication and maintenance of roadside traffic signs, data collection that utilizes roadway traffic counting equipment, time management and the importance of punctuality.
Ideal for individuals seeking full-time summer employment.
DUTIES: Performs a variety of unskilled manual labor tasks in support of road sign maintenance and engineering related operations.
Participates in the maintenance, fabrication and installation of roadside traffic signs on Berrien County maintained roads.
Collects various data such as roadway traffic counts, culvert inspections and GPS location of other roadway features.
Contributes to the design, survey and construction of roads, bridges, surface water and other public works projects to assure quality plan production and accurate quantities of materials.
Assists in the review of engineering calculations, project document filing, computer data entry, and organizing field and office data.
Participates in materials testing and geotechnical field studies.
Aids in the placement and setup/retrieval of traffic study equipment and information including traffic counts done electronically or manually.
Utilizes Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Power Point or other engineering software.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED; OR An equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Coursework in a civil engineering or construction management program is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen, as a condition of employment.
Will be subject to a background check and required to complete and pass job-related tests.
All candidates will undergo a phone interview; in-person interviews may be required at the discretion of management.
WORK CONDITIONS: Job duties will require the physical ability to lift, carry, push and pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Mobility is required for walking over long distances and rough terrain on construction sites.
Work is performed in the office or in the field in varying weather conditions.
Physical hazard from traffic and construction equipment at the work site may be present.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Able to operate the assigned equipment safely and efficiently in all types of weather conditions.
Able to drive a pickup truck or other light vehicles and perform basic math calculations.
Capable of performing maintenance of assigned tools and equipment to ensure safe and clean operating conditions.
Aware of the potential hazards associated with the work and able to adhere to general safety rules and regulations.
Flexible and able to adapt to changes in policies, rules, regulations, work environment, crew and assignments.
Strong communication and comprehension skills, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with coworkers and the general public.
Able to remain composed and professional in stressful situations.
